We live in stressful times.
Many of us are juggling so many responsibilities that we can easily feel overwhelmed—and where there’s overwhelm—we can be sure that stress will not be far behind.
Most of the time we’re not aware we’re holding on to stress. We spend so much time in our heads that we don’t notice our shoulders slowly creeping up towards our ears or the gradual clenching of our jaws.
We store our stress in the deeply hidden spaces in our body and in the tiny muscles in our face. The accumulated tension takes root between our shoulder blades, in the pit of our stomach, and sits in our lower back.
Our body holds our stress until it can no longer sit in silence.
Sooner or later it becomes too painful to ignore. We medicate ourselves, hoping the pain will dissipate and allow us to carry on living our stressful lives. And for a little while, it does.
But slowly the cycle begins again.
Have we forgotten how to relax?
If the remedy to relieve body tension is relaxation, why are we still so tense?
Is relaxation a viable option when we’re working longer hours, juggling appointments, cooking dinner, ferrying kids to umpteen activities while trying to maintain a balanced lifestyle?
Do we know what relaxation means?
Relaxation is the body’s ability to surrender its weight. To allow the pull of gravity to support us without trying to strain and fight against it.
Relaxation of the body is only achievable when our minds are relaxed, but this can be difficult to achieve when we’re busy living our lives.
Many of us spend our free time mindlessly scrolling through social media all the while believing we’re relaxing, but the truth is we’ve forgotten how.
Perhaps we’ve never learned.
Did you know that just five minutes of complete relaxation of the body and mind can completely change how you feel?
Take 5 minutes right now and try it for yourself
